“Come for the Crossfit, stay for the awesome.”
Those of you that know me know that I detest conditioning and up until one month ago I very rarely did anything besides bang weights. That all changed on a fateful trip to Scottsdale in mid-July. Me, J Wellie, and Bosephus raced through the desert and suffered through intense heat and lack of reliable directions to an In-n-Out to pick up a crap ton of strongman equipment and some kick ass retro Elieko plates.
It was during this 12 hr trek through traffic hell that big John challenged me to do Crossfit for 6 months; I assumed he was joking. This topic kept being brought up though. First on the way there, next at breakfast with Dr. Tom (who is a mental and physical beast), again as we tried to find the perfect gun store, and repeatedly as we were stuck in traffic heading home through Indio. The more I heard it, the more intrigued I became. As John dropped me off at my badass Danzig truck, he said it one more time; this time out of delirium from 12 hrs of nonsense I accepted the challenge.
My first official day as a Crossfitter was the next Monday. It was brutal then and hasn’t really gotten any easier since but I have definitely gotten better. In the past month, I’ve: somewhat learned double unders , mastered Muscle Ups (both bar and rings), PR’d my Power Clean, tore my first blister, PR’d my deadlift (205kgx6), and have continually progressed my squat and bench all while vastly improving my conditioning by crossfitting 4 times a week. Though I thought I’d be sub 5% body fat by now, I’ve still got 5 months to go and probably wont stop. This stuff is actually pretty damn fun and it’s been great getting to know some of the newer folks.
